 Month Three

Dear Amelia,

Today you are three months old! I find it hard to wrap my brain around that sentence. Three months – have you really only been here that long? It seems so much longer. You have grown and changed so much from the tiny orange glowworm you once were, that you surely must have already been with us for 38 years. This might seem cliche, but it’s true: I can’t remember what life was like before you. Of course, I remember what it was like, but it seems that it was all so trivial and unimportant. I absolutely love being your mom.

You are getting bigger and bigger every day. At three months old, you have just started wearing 0-3 month clothes, but they are still a little big on you. Also, you now have enough of a belly to hold up your pants! You’re wearing Newborn pants, though, because while your belly is getting bigger, it’s not big enough yet to hold up the 0-3 month pants. Your hair is growing, but it’s still just fuzz at this point – no hair bows for you yet! Your eyes are still a gorgeous shade of blue, and your fingers are long and elegant. You have delicate ankles, and I have to buy tube socks that go up to your knees just so they’ll stay on. You’re slowly developing that deliciously adorable baby fat, but I think it is all going to your thighs and your cheeks!

You are smiling every day now, and you also talk to us. It is so fun to have “conversations” with you. I’ll say something, then I will pause and you’ll coo, and then I’ll say something else. Most mornings you and I have talks about how your night was, what kind of dreams you had, and what you would like to do that day. You’re sleeping quite well at night – most of the time you’ll go to sleep between 7 and 8 PM, then get up to eat at 2 AM, again at 6 AM, and then you’re up for the day between 8 and 9 AM. Last week you rolled over for the first time, and I was shocked – I wasn’t expecting that for quite a while! You’ve done it a few more times since then, though, so I know it wasn’t a fluke! Lately you have started to become more opinionated, and you will definitely let me know when you are unhappy. You used to be content lounging in your swing or bouncy seat, but now you want to be sitting up and looking around – thank goodness Grandma G bought you a Bumbo seat! I’ll just plop you in that thing and sit you down on the floor and you are happy as a clam. It comes in especially handy when I want to take a shower. In the last month or so you have started sucking on your fists instead of your pacifier. You still like the pacifier when you are sleepy, but most of the time you’re trying to fit your whole hand into your mouth. It’s not a very ladylike thing to do, and it makes me and Daddy laugh.

I love spending my days with you, and having a buddy to run errands with me. You seem to enjoy getting out and about – you love seeing new things. You always cry when I am strapping you into your car seat, but as soon as I’m done, you just look at me as if you’re saying “OK Mom, let’s go!” You love riding in the car, as well as being pushed around in your stroller. You enjoy looking at new things – I can almost see your brain trying to process all of the new sights and sounds and smells. I love watching your daddy play with you – when he gets home from work, he can’t wait to cuddle with you! Often times you are nursing when he gets home, and as soon as you hear his voice you start looking for him. Then, when he sits on the couch and talks to me, you get distracted from the important job of eating and just listen to his voice. You’re Daddy’s little girl.

Love, Mama
