A Girl After My Own Heart

April 20th, 2009

Amelia loves to read. Yes, she’s young, but this girl LOVES books. We read 4 to 6 books at one sitting, which is a lot for a little one who is not yet four months old. Her absolute favorite, A Picnic with Monet, is from the Mini Masters series by Julie Merberg and Suzanne Bober. I must confess that I bought this book (along with In the Garden with Van Gogh and Dancing with Degas) months before Amelia was born, hoping to instill in her my love of reading as well as an appreciation for beautiful art. Never too young to start, right?

I’m not sure what it is about this book that strikes a chord with her, but Amelia “helps” me read this book! I’ll open the book and read what is on the first page, and then let her look at the picture for a bit before I turn to the next page. Nine times out of ten, Amelia will “read” as well! It’s not just random baby talk, either. She will wait until I read the text to her before she reads it herself. It’s incredibly cute, although I’m sure I find it much more endearing than the rest of The Internet.

I think I borrowed the Monet book from the library once. Great stuff. That’s cool that she loves reading so much already!! I’m reading “Reading Magic” by Mem Fox right now, on recommendation from a friend, and she talks about how important it is to read out loud to our kids from the start, and to read at least 3 stories a day. Sounds like you guys have a great head start on that. =)
