Welcome to birdro.com!
My husband Mark and I live in the southeast U.S. with our lovely daughters, Amelia and Florence. We also share our lives with a lab(ish) goofball of a dog named Shelby.
Amelia has SUCH an imagination these days. Her mind is filled with imaginary friends and it is so fun to listen to her “play” with them! Her favorite friends right now are Richard Scarry’s Huckle, Lowely, Hilda and Sally from the TV show The Busy World of Richard Scarry!
A few weeks ago Amelia woke up from her nap and declared that her name was no longer Amelia – her name was Sally! We then played “Sally Day” for the rest of the afternoon, which pretty much consisted of dancing around the house singing “Sally day! Sally day! Sally day!” For about a week after that she would randomly tell us to call her Sally. I asked her who I was if she was Sally . . . she thankfully said that I was Sally’s mommy, Mark was Sally’s daddy and Florence was Sally’s sister!
Amelia is a great little mother. Any little baby animal she sees (in a book or on TV) she pretends to scoop up into her hands; she will then carry her new baby around for hours, wrapping it in blankets and tucking it into bed when it gets tired. Sometimes she decides that she has two puppies and she holds their leashes and walks them around the house (or the store, or the park or any number of other places).
We have many nicknames for Florence and Amelia recently gave her sister a new nickname – Floey! We had originally thought that Amelia would call her Lolo (and that is the name she practiced with her speech therapist). She used Lolo for a while and then out of the blue one day started calling her Floey. Of course the name stuck!
Amelia is becoming a master manipulator at bedtime. When one of us puts her to bed she tells us to go into our room and put our PJ’s on – when we come back out and try to pass her door and head to the living room she will whisper-shout “DADA” or “MAMA” and when we ask what she needs she yells “I love you!” and says she wants to give us five hugs and five kisses (even though she gave many hugs and kisses before we left her room the first time). It is so precious – OF COURSE we go back in her room for five hugs and five kisses! On nights when she is feeling particularly feisty she will whisper-shout for whoever didn’t put her to bed to come back to her room and she does the same thing with them. Oh, how I love those five hugs and five kisses!!!
At bedtime we also hear “Mama? Mama, (or Dada? Dada,) I just want to say one thing…..” and then she looks around her room and will say “Mama, pick up that toy/open the door all the way/rub my back.” Each night we have quite a few “one more things”! Every night she also has to tell us that if it thunders she has her flashlight in her bed and she will call out “MAMA, BIG BOOM BACK!!!” and she will then shine her flashlight at the window and say “GO AWAY BOOM!!!”
